Called "Isla Chiquita" (small island),
also known as "Ultima Virgen "
(last virgin). Culebra was founded in
October 27, 1880 by Cayetano Escudero.

National Wildlife Refuge

The Wildlife Refuge is comprised of about one quarter of the islands
land area
and includes 22 smaller islands in the vicinity. It supports
tropical island
flora and fauna representing the most healthy
coastal resource viewable in
Puerto Rico. The Flamenco peninsula
is home to 50,000 nesting Sooty Terns. Mount
Resaca contains
the largest remaining forest with an area of rock strewn canyons
and ravines that form a unique habitat known as boulder forest.
The beaches are
nesting areas for Leatherback
and Hawkbill turtles (endangered species).
