Narcisco Figueroa
He was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico the 31 of October of
1906. He began his studies of music with his parents at the seven years of age.
At ten already he played in public with his brother Jose the Sonatas de Mozart
and Beethoven for piano and violin, and accompanied the artists who passed by
San Juan.
At fifteen years of age, he entered the Real Conservatory of Music of Madrid
where he studied piano and harmony. He unanimously gained " the First Prize of
Piano " and the one of " Music of Camera ". Immediately he made a tour by all
Spain with the Director of the Conservatory, D. Antonio Fernandez Bordas. He
made in addition other " tournées " by Spain, Portugal and possessions of Spain
in Africa in company of his brothers Jose and Kachiro, and with other famous
artists.
He was disciple of direction of Orchestra in the Conservatory of Barcelona under
the direction of the teacher Eduardo Toldrá, where also he made studies of
counterpoint and composition with the teacher Pich Santasusana.
In Paris he was disciple of insigne masterful Alfred Cortot, entering in " the
Ecole Normale de Musique " where he received the Degree.
He was by many years Professor and Director of the Department of Piano of the
Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. Also he comprised next to his brothers of
the recognized "Figueroa Brothers Quintet".
In the 1959 his Song book " of Puerto Rico was published ", work based on the
Puerto Rican folklore that contains several of his compositions. There is
compound innumerable Danza, many in which had been put under to participate at
this moment in the contests that support the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture
and the Circle of Recreation of San Germa'n, being the composer whom more prizes
he has obtained. At 90 years of age he continues active in education, the
composition and, once in a while also carries out personal presentations
offering conferences illustrated on music, particularly on the Puerto Rican
Danza.
As recently as Sunday 27 of April of 1997, the Circle of Recreation of San
Germa'n exalted to the Gallery of Famous Composers of Puerto Rican Danzas.
