Francisco J. Amy

Francisco J. Amy was born the 2 of August of 1837 in Arroyo. He studied in the Episcopal Academy de Cheshire, Connecticut. Only just seventeen years old, he taught English and Spanish and he collaborated for the Waverly Magazine and other newspapers and magazines of the New England, which were productions very well known in the intellectual circles of that place. In 1858, he returned to Puerto Rico, but he did not tolerate the Spanish colonial regime in the Island. By then, he had lived and known the freedom of the United States, in where he became naturalized like citizen of that country. Soon, Amy returned to Puerto Rico, and he settled down in Ponce. There he founded, along with Zeno Gandía, a magazine of literary and scientific character: The Study. In addition, it published Echoes and notes, a collection of his poems, in which they include some of his translations of this time. In 1888, he returned to the United States and he worked like journalist. he published in New York the Informed Newspaper; he collaborated, in addition, for some newspapers, in which he wrote as much in English as in spanish.

Francisco J. Amy nació el 2 de agosto de 1837 en Arroyo. Estudió en la Episcopal Academy de Cheshire, Connecticut. Con sólo diecisiete años, enseñaba inglés y español y colaboraba para el Waverly Magazine y otros periódicos y revistas de Nueva Inglaterra, los cuales eran producciones muy conocidas en los círculos intelectuales de ese lugar.

En 1858, regresó a Puerto Rico, pero no toleró el régimen colonial español en la Isla. Esto se debió a que ya había vivido y conocido la libertad de los Estados Unidos, en donde se naturalizó como ciudadano de ese país.

Luego, Amy regresó a Puerto Rico, y se estableció en Ponce. Allí fundó, junto con Zeno Gandía, una revista de carácter literario y científico: El Estudio. Además, publicó Ecos y notas, una colección de sus poemas, en la que incluyen algunas de sus traducciones de esta época.

En 1888, regresó a Estados Unidos y trabajó como periodista. Publicó en Nueva York La Gaceta Ilustrada; colaboraba, además, para algunos periódicos, en los que escribía tanto en inglés como en espanol.
