Carmen Rita Torrent
Born in Cayey, Puerto Rico, in 1947 her parents immigrated to the Bronx where she attended public schools. She embarked on her legal career, later in life, after raising her family. She received her JD from CUNY Law School in 1986 as a member of its first graduating class and her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Baruch College. While a law student she joined the Puerto Rican Bar Association becoming its president in 1998
On June 6, 2002, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appointed Carmen Rita Torrent
Executive Director of the Commission on Women’s Issues. Carmen brings extensive
years of public service to her role as executive director. Prior to joining the
Bloomberg administration, Carmen Rita served as an Assistant Attorney General in
both the Labor and Litigation Bureaus of the New York State Department of Law.
She has also served as Special Assistant Corporation Counsel to the Human
Resources Administration, was Senior Secretary to the Honorable Frank Torres,
retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Criminal Term, and was a staff attorney
with the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Division.
